As the holiday season ramps up, fulfillment centers are running at full speed. With record order volumes and nonstop shipping activity, warehouses become magnets not only for consumer attention\u2014but also for scammers looking to exploit the surge.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

While phishing and social-engineering attempts are nothing new, a recent alert from the\u00a0<\/span>Massachusetts State Police Commonwealth Fusion Center<\/span><\/a>\u00a0highlights a troubling twist that criminals are now pairing\u00a0<\/span>\u201cbrushing\u201d\u00a0scams<\/span><\/b>\u00a0with\u00a0<\/span>QR-code phishing, or \u201cquishing.\u201d<\/span><\/b>\u00a0What started as a nuisance for individual consumers has evolved into a tactic that could easily find its way into professional environments where packages, labels, and QR codes are part of everyday operations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

How These Scams Work and Why They Matter to Warehouses<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>

A\u00a0<\/span>brushing<\/span><\/i>\u00a0scam\u00a0begins when someone receives an unsolicited package labeled with their name and address, usually\u00a0containing\u00a0a low-value item. The goal is to post fake positive reviews under that person\u2019s identity, boosting the sender\u2019s online sales reputation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The new variation includes\u00a0<\/span>QR codes<\/span><\/b>\u00a0on or inside the packages, which invites the recipient to \u201cconfirm delivery,\u201d \u201ctrack your order,\u201d or \u201creport an issue.\u201d Scanning those codes can direct users to malicious\u00a0sites\u00a0impersonating carriers or retailers, where attackers harvest personal information or install malware.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

For warehouse teams, these\u00a0scams\u00a0can slip into legitimate inbound workflows. A mislabeled return, vendor sample, or supplier \u201cgift\u201d can easily make its way into a receiving area. Scanning a rogue QR code on a packing slip or label could compromise a device connected to your network,\u00a0or worse, open a path to internal systems used for inventory and fulfillment management.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
